Mantay means mother in quechua and this project is mother to vulnerable young women who have had babies when they are very young. The home is in a secure location, takes in women-in-need and helps them bring up their children, providing all necessary support. In some cases, this includes pushing for justice for the victims of rape, pioneering work on women’s sexual rights in Peru.
As well as the home, Mantay has a workshop where women over 18 years gain valuable skills and an income from sales. Mantay runs an internal bank where they help the women save so when they are ready to leave, they have a nest-egg to set them up in their new home. Through buying these products, Llamarama and our customers enable these women to eventually become financially independent whilst also providing a valuable income stream to support the running costs of the home. There are currently supporting over 20 women and their children so you can imagine, it’s a very lively place!
Llamarama has visited and audited all our suppliers against both fair trade principles and ethical codes of conduct including issues such as fair pay, health & safety, working hours and protective equipment. We are greatly impressed by both the business and pastoral sides of this home for vulnerable young women and keen to support them.
